The Bishops School

The Bishop’s School is an academic community pursuing intellectual, artistic and athletic excellence in the context of the Episcopal tradition. We are dedicated to offering the highest quality education to a diverse student body and to fostering integrity, imagination, moral responsibility and commitment to serving the larger community. While it may be true that a school is measured by what its graduates become, for The Bishop’s School it is the “becoming” part of this belief that has shaped the School’s mission for 109 years. In addition to stimulating and challenging students academically, we believe that it is our role to help young people learn to be morally discriminating and to define ethical standards that will take them from adolescence to adulthood.

Jack Harvey

Hi! I'm Jack, a Junior at The Bishop's School. I've been with Kid by Kid for over two years. My favorite subjects in school are math and history. When I'm not working on schoolwork, you can find me working on a computer science project, listening to music, or at football practice after school. I love to apply my skills and love of learning wherever I can.
For as long as I can remember, I've been trying to explain things, and Kid by Kid gave me an important outlet to give back. I joined Kid by Kid because I've always loved the gratifying feeling that comes when you see the improvement of a learner. That feeling of understanding is evidence of the immense impact that Kid by Kid has had on hundreds of learners - I'm grateful for every opportunity that this program has given me.

Mia Gaspar

Hello, My name is Mia Gaspar and I have volunteered at Kid By Kid for the past two years. My favorite subjects are Chinese, Math, and Science! Outside of school I enjoy baking, Field Hockey, and music. As I am currently learning Chinese myself and my favorite subject to tutor in is Chinese. When it comes to language I am able to apply my skills that I have learned in school, and also strengthen them by practicing with the kids I tutor. Kid By Kid is so special because it has allowed me to learn the skills to help someone else approach a challenge. I have grown close to the kids I tutor and I love being able to learn more about them. I am so grateful for the opportunity that Kid By Kid has provided for me and the learners, and am so proud to be making a good impact on my community.

Leela Wainio

I’ve been volunteering with Kid By Kid since March of 2022 (with about 130+ hours of tutoring and lesson planning as of when I’m writing this); and I can honestly say I really love how this organization has helped people. It’s so fulfilling being able to see the tangible change you’re making in peoples’ lives. I’ve been able to make learning easier and more fun for people, which is such a gift. Plus, if they understand concepts as they’re taught, they’ll more easily keep up with future material too; and, they won’t give up on themselves by thinking they’re the types of people to never do well in school. 1 on 1 tutoring gives my time to understand how my specific tutors learn and what they find entertaining. For example, I’m tutoring one student in Chinese and I’ve been incorporating lots of different ways to learn (emoji battles, conversing about things he finds interesting, watching Chinese cartoons, etc…), and I think it’s really helped. Volunteering in Kid By Kid has helped me realize I want to work as a teacher and when I grow up. I’m so glad I’ve been able to make such a large change in my students’ educational paths, and I’m excited to tutor as much as I can in the future.

Ava Bradley

Hi, my name is Ava, and I am a senior at the Bishop's School! In my free time, I love to write, read, paint, and sew (preferably all at once). I've been tutoring with Kid By Kid since my freshman year, and have enjoyed every bit of it. As a tutor, I've learned quite a bit myself, honing my explanation skills, teaching techniques, and patience. My favorite subjects are English, History, and Philosophy, so I understand the struggle that sometimes comes with understanding more cut-and-dry work. It has been very inspiring to witness my tutees gain more confidence by exploring learning techniques that work best for them throughout the years. Being able to talk to students who have lived vastly different experiences than I have and still connect has been immensely meaningful. I look forward to continuing working with Kid By Kid!

Addie West

Hi, my name is Addie West. I am in the class of 2026 at The Bishops School and have been with Kid By Kid since the 9th Grade. While I am at school I enjoy math and science, along with playing on the soccer and volleyball teams. The hours I spend outside of school, I will probably be walking around with friends, at the beach, or at home drawing.

Angelina Kim

Angelina is a sophomore at The Bishop’s School and loves to read and hang out with her friends. Her favorite subjects are science and history, and she hopes that she can spread the joy of exploration she found in her classes and share her discoveries with Kid By Kid students. In her free time, Angelina does competitive sleeping and plays Exploding Kittens (which is a card game and thankfully doesn’t involve any violence towards kittens).

One recurring pattern that I have noticed throughout my education is that the more passionate a teacher is about subjects, the more their students learn and have fun. In fourth grade, one of my teachers taught us about the whole history of California within a couple of weeks and showed us how to take good notes. Her constant enthusiasm for history, kind smile, and great care for her students showed me how fun history and learning overall could be. When tutoring at Kid By Kid, I hope that I can share the same passion and enthusiasm that I have for what I teach and make their learning experience thorough and fun. Maybe someday they can share their passions with other students!
