Local Kids Working to Close COVID-19 Education Gap
When Bishop’s High School Student Daxton Gutekunst, started his non-profit, “Kid by Kid” in 2018, he designed it as a Saturday face-to-face sit down with free tutoring and pizza; an opportunity for students to help other students who have fewer educational resources.

Recently, Daxton announced that they shifted to a virtual platform, and also that KBK is partnering with “three School Districts within San Diego County (San Diego Unified, Lakeside Union and Santee School District); within these three districts, we’ve had 24 separate schools sign up with us."

According to a study from the Migration Policy Institute, among America's low-educated parents of young children, 77 percent are immigrants or refugees. In San Diego alone, immigrants and refugees account for 39 percent of parents residing with at least one child under the age of 18.
